As a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, I will travel to the Dominican Republic, Curaçao, Australia, and Japan to study international baseball communities.
The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant for purposeful, independent study outside the United States. Beginning July 28, I will immerse myself in international baseball communities in order to work and live amid the nurturing relationships inherent to baseball. I will explore (1) gender issues in a male-dominated game; (2) close and intergenerational relationships inherent to baseball communities; (3) an allegedly slow game existing in an ever-quickening age.
A bit of background on my project: women have been formally kicked off baseball diamonds three times in the United States. First, in the late 19th century, next, when men returned home after World War II, and most recently with the Title IX mandate of equal funding for men’s baseball and women’s softball. I want a reconciliation with the baseball diamond.
